An Italian poster for the movie Casablanca has sold for $us478,000 ($au606,000) – the equal second highest price paid at auction for a movie poster.
The 141 cm x 199 cm poster was produced for the Italian release of the film in 1946. The English version of the movie, starring Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, was released in 1942. The poster artwork was produced by Luigi Martinati.
The highest price ever paid for a movie poster was for one of four surviving posters for the 1927 silent movie Metropolis which sold in November, 2005 for $us690,000 ($au876,000).
The poster for the silent 1927 mystery film London After Midnight was sold in 2014 for $us478,00 ($au606,000), the same price as was paid for the Casablanca poster.
