Chinese libation cup

Sotheby’s Australia has sold a 17th century Chinese libation cup, carved from rhinoceros horn, for $75,640 at an auction in Melbourne. The cup was discovered in a Sydney op shop and bought for $4.

The cup, with magnolia and prunus decoration, which has a large chip., was given a pre-sale estimate of $20,000 to $30,000.

Similar libation cups (without the chip) have sold for close to $90,000 in Australia and as much as $200,000 overseas.
