When David Gonzalez was remodelling his home in Elbow Lake, Minnesota, he noticed something unusual among the old newspapers that had been used as wall insulation.
It was a copy of Action Comics No 1 from 1938, the very first comic to feature Superman. The Overstreet Guide price for the comic, described as “showing the effects of its long service as insulation” but with “bright, sparkling colors and sturdy off-white pages”, is $110,000 but it’s currently up for auction at ComicConnect with bidding at $137,000. If you want to get a bid in, the auction closes on June 11th.
Unfortunately for David, in all the excitement of finding the comic, his wife’s aunt grabbed it and tore the back page. ComicConnect estimates that the tear cost David around $75,000.
