Kensitas cigarette card of Queen Elizabeth 1
Kensitas cigarette card of Queen Elizabeth 1

Royalty has always been a popular topic with card issuers in Britain but these cards were often less avidly sought by collectors. W D & H O Wills issued a series of Kings and Queens in 1897; this was the first to have descriptions printed on the back of each card. Royalty cards sometimes devote a whole series to one particular monarch, such as the 1935 set by WD & HO Wills set of fifty portraits of George V. Other sets are historical, such as the John Player 1935 set of fifty Kings and Queens of England or commemorate a particular event, such as a coronation.
